SR22 Guide

SR22 Insurance for Young and Teen Drivers

A teenager can end up needing SR22 just like an adult driver. Here is how it typically plays out between a parent's policy, the teen's own coverage, and the cost involved.

Teen drivers are not exempt from SR22 requirements. A violation serious enough to trigger SR22 for an adult, most commonly a DUI, driving without insurance, or an at-fault accident combined with excessive points, triggers the same requirement for a minor or young adult driver. The details of how it is handled, however, differ from an adult in a few important ways.

Whose Policy Covers the SR22?

In most cases, a teen still living at home and listed on a parent's auto policy will need the SR22 filed either on the parent's policy or on a new policy in the teen's own name, depending on the state and the carrier. Some carriers will file the SR22 as an endorsement on the family policy. Others require the teen to carry a separate policy once an SR22 is involved, particularly if the parent's carrier does not write SR22 policies at all.

Why Teen SR22 Premiums Run Higher

Young drivers already pay more for auto insurance due to limited driving history. Add an SR22-triggering violation, and the premium increase compounds two high-risk factors at once: age and driving record. Expect a teen's SR22 policy to cost noticeably more than an equivalent policy for an experienced adult driver with the same single violation.

Non-Owner Policies for Teens Without Their Own Car

If a teen does not own a vehicle and primarily drives a parent's car, a non-owner SR22 policy may satisfy the state requirement without the cost of insuring a specific vehicle. This is not available in every situation, since some carriers require a listed vehicle when a household already has one available to the driver. Ask directly whether a non-owner policy fits the situation. See our non-owner SR22 page for general details.

State Rules Still Apply the Same Way

The SR22 duration, filing agency, and reinstatement process are set by the state, not by the driver's age. A teen in a state with a three-year requirement faces the same three-year clock an adult would. Age affects the premium and sometimes the policy structure, not the underlying legal requirement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a parent's policy cover a teen's SR22 requirement?
In many cases yes, as an endorsement on the family policy, though this depends on the carrier and state. Some situations require a separate policy in the teen's name.
Does removing a teen from the family policy remove the SR22 requirement?
No. The SR22 requirement is tied to the teen driver's license, not to any specific policy. It follows the driver regardless of which policy carries it.
How long does a teen's SR22 last?
The same duration set by the state for the underlying violation, typically two or three years depending on the state. Age does not change the length of the requirement.
